about

Words from Sara Teasdale's poem of the same name.

Sara Teasdale’s hundred year old poem is strangely calming, a deceptively peaceful counter to human complacency and (self)destructiveness. We spend a lot of our time framing the anthropocene world in our terms, but it was there before we were and it will be there when we’re gone. Sam’s connection to and respect for nature is profound, and that’s really necessary to sing these words as they should be sung, I couldn’t be more delighted that he was up for making this song with me.

lyrics

There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;

And frogs in the pools singing at night,
And wild-plum trees in tremulous white;

Robins will wear their feathery fire,
Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;

And not one will know of the war, not one
Will care at last when it is done.

Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree,
If mankind perished utterly;

And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn
Would scarcely know that we were gone.
